Standards identification and terminology

Joanna Goodwin spent her career where standards publishing meets terminology management, serving international standardization at the ISO Central Secretariat and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), from which she has since retired.

Contributions to standards

  • Author of RFC 5141, A Uniform Resource Name (URN) Namespace for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) (IETF, 2008), with Holger Apel — the specification behind the urn:iso:std: identifiers, which give ISO standards, their editions, supplements, languages, and even individual clauses, tables, and terms persistent, location-independent identification on the Internet

  • Editorial Manager at the ISO Central Secretariat when RFC 5141 was written, and named in it as the declared registrant of the ISO URN namespace

  • Former Terminology Coordinator at the IEC, coordinating terminology across the IEC’s technical committees

  • Former secretary of IEC/TC 1, Terminology — the committee that maintains the International Electrotechnical Vocabulary (IEV)
